Who knew a petrol puddle could offer such beauty inspiration? Using petrol puddles as hair and nail inspiration is So. Last. Season.
Now, it’s the turn of lips to be hit with the oil slick beauty trend. And the results are surprisingly beautiful. Instabeauties are mixing metallic shades of purple, green, pink, blue and grey to get that petrol like swirly mix of oils. Also known as holographic or mermaid lips, thankfully there’s no actual oil involved in creating the look. But a slick of super shiny lipgloss goes a long way.
Shiny. Sheeny. Glean-y. Lustrous. Iridescent. All of the aforementioned don't even begin to describe the mesmerizing effects oil-slicked lips have on the naked eye. The trend first started gaining traction back in the winter, but is reaching a fever pitch amidst the dog days of summer. We imagine this is because the sizzling temps are much more hospitable to the wet-finish look (glossy lids, dewy skin, etc.) than, say, a matte lip. (Sorry, Kylie.)
The oil-slick effect mimics that of the syrupy petrol liquid, with a holographic-like veneer and a rainbow's worth of jewel tone shades, such as blue, violet, and green. It's all about how the light hits your pout. Here, a few of our favorite takes on the trend:
