It’s 2016 and flower crowns have officially had their day – please welcome the mermaid crown.
Chelsea Sheils, a 27-year-old florist from Melbourne had spent her life making flower crowns until she came up with the idea of seashell crowns – her inspiration being everyones favourite Disney princess.
“I’ve always wanted to be Ariel, under the sea. I’m a real beach bum. That was where my obsession with the sea and shells came from”, Chelsea said.
She said: “I was scared of people’s opinions,” she said. “I thought people would think it was dumb to put shells on your head.”
Last year the 27-year-old revealed her creation to the world, uncovering some of the most beautiful and intricate crowns you have ever seen – decorated with jewels, chains and real life sea shells.
Since Chelsea launched her business, the trend has really taken off – attracting customers from Europe and America – who buy the crowns for festivals, birthdays and photoshoots.
“There’s a lot of glitter,” Chelsea said. “I love seeing people go all out.”
To make the majestic crowns, Chelsea uses sea shells that she sources from suppliers in Australia, India and Hawaii – all countries that have an excess of shells on their beaches.
For small crowns she can use around 20 shells and for the larger ones, she can use 50 shells.
The tiny masterpieces take days to make, making them a lot more difficult that flower crowns.
“I wing it with every single one,” she said. “I never have a vision in my head before I start. I get inspiration from each different shell that I use and the colors and the contrast. It comes to me as I make it.”
