PHOTOS: SPRING TREND! OH SO POLKA! DOTS DOTS! AND DOTS!

Polka dots are retro. And retro is both IN as well as pretty cool, I’ll say that. I have this idea that alongside the 70s trend, there’s a slight time travel fashion wise to the 50s and 60s. Polka dots were a must back then.
The KEY however to nailing a polka dot look is to take them from their retro setting and to put them into today’s, adding your own razzmatazz, and hoping to get a very effortless un- cheesy way of wearing the dots. Which brings me to 1) not everyone can nail this look. Sure millions can try (and unfortunately they do), but few can pull off a great polka dot style without looking like they’re stuck in their 10 year old selves; 2) I do actually like a few polka dot looks. Very few and very particularly done. AND 3) I do generally feel polka dots are the definition of cheesy.

When you pair two different polka dot prints together, vary the dot size. Wearing a smaller dot on top, and a larger polka dot print on the bottom (or vice versa) is a new trend that is becoming very popular among the fashion bloggers. So, instead of wearing the same size polka dot head to toe, try mixing it up a bit with varied dot sizes. Try mixing a polka dot print with with other patterns and prints (just as long as you know how to do it correctly). When matching a polka dot piece with a print, make sure that the print is in the same color tone as the polka dot print color. Also pay attention to scale — If your floral pattern is large, go for smaller dots and vice versa. This is a fun, new and bold trend. It may seem intimidating to wear a dot with a print, but it is easier to style than you think.

Wear polka dots with a bold color. This combination is a great way to make a polka dot outfit stand out. Pair a great polka dot top with a bold skirt, or vice versa. Pairing a bold color with a polka dot print, highlights the cute dot pattern. Try to wear a modest polka dot dress. You can also mix and match a polka dot dress with your favorite modest cardigan or blazer. Polka dot dresses are also fun to accessorize with fun statement jewelry or a belt.
