Granted, some fashion trends are a bit out there
for the average man's taste. You won't find any
of those on the list below. The experts we
tapped will help you nail fall dressing while still
maintaining a conservative tone.
1. Tan
Yes, a color can be a trend. This fall, apparel
buyer Chris Green recommends mixing a
healthy amount of tan into your wardrobe. "It
can be worn casually in the form of a sweater
(pictured right) or a button-down shirt or as a
statement outerwear piece." It'll look best when
worn with rich navys or dark browns.
2. Chelsea boots
For fall, the classic Chelsea boot is coming back
in a big way, according to accessories buyer
John Wong. "Its clean upper and pull-on design
is a great alternative to lace-up boots and
chukkas that have dominated previous seasons,"
Wong told us. "And with the increased focus on
this shoe style, there are plenty of options at
various price points.
Tan colored Chelsea boots will work with more
casual looks, such as jeans or khaki. Black ones
with slight sheens are more polished-looking,
and can be worn with dark navy or gray suits or
dress pants. A boot in a rich, chocolate suede,
like the Loake 1880 pair pictured right, will look
great with "both casual and office-ready looks,
such as a gray suit or jeans," says Wong.
3. Turtlenecks
The turtlenecks is an extremely versatile
clothing item for the fall and winter; "some are
chunky and textured, like this turtleneck
sweater that can get you through bitter morning
Commutes.
— we'd most likely wear it with dark-wash
jeans and a button-up shirt.
4. Briefcases and their alternatives
"With so much focus on backpacks in recent
seasons, it's easy to forget that there are other
alternatives to carry our everyday essentials,"
Wong says. "However, a classic briefcase always
looks appropriate with a suit or for a business
meeting.
Briefcase is ideal for those easing into their first
briefcase.
5. Plaids and checks
"Plaids and checks in rich fall colors are a great
way to liven up a seasonal palette that can
otherwise skew toward dark and largely solid
colors, The flannel shirt (pictured right)
has a healthy pop of color and is great for
weekend wear once it starts to cool down.
6. High-end tech accessories
"This fall is also a great time to replace tech
accessories that have taken a beating during the
summer months," Haury suggests. "These
headphones from Master & Dynamic are worth
the price — the sound quality is fantastic and
the design is more considered than you'll find
from most other brands.
7. Chunky, textured knits
"Sweaters this fall are tending toward thicker,
more textured knits that provide more warmth
and add dimension to your look.
8. Updated outerwear
"You can change up your outerwear choices in a
few different ways," according to Haury.
"Choosing non-traditional colors, like Theory's
sandy-colored overcoat , is an easy way of
updating your look for fall. Similarly, oversized
coat designs will provide a stylish silhouette
while maintaining a conservative tone for
work." If you want to switch up your basic black
wool coat, these two ideas are a good ones to
help you start the search.
